1. Present yourself.

My name is Florie Dorestant, I am 21 years old. I was born and I grew up in Haiti, I am currently continuing a master's degree in education and leadership at the University of Ottawa. I work as Active Living Manager in a large company, and I also launched my little event in events: Glaïeul Event Company. I organize creative workshops (cooking, painting, various themes) where people can meet, create links and have a good time together. I also offer event decoration services. I consider myself a multipotential person, and I have a great love for everything related to art.

2. What pushed you to choose this area? Was it always your dream? Why did you choose the name of Glaïeul Event Company?

Yes, I have always dreamed of working in this area. I wanted to be a planner long before I even know the term! I have always liked to organize activities, concerts, weddings - everything that makes you feel! In Haiti, I wanted to get started from an early age, but I was looking for models, training and opportunities that were not easy to find. Today, I am happy to be able to get started at my own pace.

I wanted a flower name, but not a flower that we hear everywhere. Something less common, which stands out. I chose Glaïeul because it was the name of my promotion to preschool. It brings me back to my childhood memories, at a time when I was carefree, full of creativity and daring. In events, we think a lot before getting started, because each decision has risks. But a child always has his spontaneity and his positivity. It is this state of mind that I want to keep through gladius. I added Event Company because I didn't want to limit myself. In events, you can quickly find yourself having to choose a single specialty, but it is not my wish. I want to keep a wide approach: one day organize weddings, pensions, baby shows, conferences ... all kinds of events capable of bringing strong emotions to life. For the moment, these are the creative workshops that fill me the most, but I keep this door wide open.

3. What are the qualities required, according to you, to exercise this profession?

You have to be creative, have a great sense of responsibility and good communication skills. Organization and flexibility are also important.

4. What are the different tasks to be performed before the organization of an event?

We must first clarify the concept, search for partners, plan all logistics (place, equipment, progress), organize communication and promotion (social networks, posters, visuals, etc.), then provide all the practical details for D -Day.

None None

5. What is the event that you prefer to organize the most?

Pasta & Vino! This is one of my favorites. We come together to cook Italian pasta together, drink wine, taste cold meats ... It's friendly, warm and delicious!

6. What are the biggest challenges you are facing daily for your business?

One of the challenges is the lack of time. I work full -time and continue my master's in full -time master studies in parallel, so I have to manage my business in my free time. I am also still new in Ottawa: I gradually create my own network, without family or direct benchmarks here. It is not easy, but the positive feedback from people, their comments and their enthusiasm encourage me to continue. There is also a real lack of social activities in Ottawa, it is a city where we study or work, often in circles like the government. People work a lot at a distance, there is a need for more lightness, meeting, creativity, and that's what I try to bring.

7. What are the different professions of your team members?

For the moment, I manage the business alone, but I collaborate with several people. Photographers, relatives who help me remotely (such as my parents for accounting), content creators like Spotted Ottawa, Ottawa Girlies Date, and Jelissa. I also work with Aida’s KTCHN, which supports the culinary part during events (brunch, aperitif, etc.). A large event company can count on a varied team: logistics, communication, decoration, coordination, technique, customer service ...

None None

8. Describe a typical day of your life.

I get up in the morning, I prepare and go to work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. When I come home, I work on my master's lessons, then I devote myself to my business: content creation, email sending, budget management, activities planning and unforeseen. Events generally take place on weekends, so I take the opportunity to shop, prepare the sets and make the facilities.

9. What are the myths that exist around your job?

Many people think it's an easy job, because we only see the "fun" side. But behind each event, even small, there is a lot of logistics, coordination and stress. It is a demanding job where you have to touch everything.

10. What advice would you give to a young who wants to embark on events?

Find what you want to do exactly, form, and get started! Do not be afraid to take measured risks. Start on your scale, make your creativity talk, inspire others, but above all, bring your own touch. And remember: ideas alone are not enough, it is the actions that make the difference.
